RL-7 is my "go to" powder for the 45/70 from 330 gr Hp. to 550 grain WFNs, AA2015 is in that burn range and works well, I would not even experiment with these powders in the 44/40, they are too slow and will result in squib loads and much unburnt powder. For mild loads in the 44/40 I'd def. try Trail Boss powder.45-70 Government Handloading - Hornady FTX 325gr and IMR4198 load work up. #Starlinebrass #IMR #handloading #reloading #4570 #hornady

I did some primer based testing today and came to two conclusions: 1. standard primers produce softer fouling. 2. at least with 70 grs of KIK 2F, federal magnum primers produce the best groups (by a long shot!). 3. standard large rifle primers produced the worst groups compared to magnum primers.Me having suppressor experience, and loving the 45/70 here are my thoughts. Whatever powder you use, don't go below 30% case fill. Use a stout crimp to encourage complete powder burning. I have some data if you need it, don't use cast bullets with a suppressor, a lot of centerfire suppressors aren't user serviceable or cleanable.
